The real joy of this film comes by its goofiest and most outlandish moments, but also with its impressive stunts and action. I guess my point is, if you don't accept the film for what it is, I don't think you'll have any fun with it. Creative huh? At one point, Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) tells someone to back off or she will scar her face with tire tracks. The climax of the film begins at an event called Race Wars. There's an underground motorcycle gang who steals DVD players and stashes them in a Thai-food restaurant.

This film is extremely dated, but it's an interesting watch, especially considering where the series has gone to now. In fact, it's way easier to watch this film now that I've seen every installment to date. But that won't be the last time the film could have you roll your eyes. Oh and those hundreds of people each have their own car and parking spot, that is. Where Furious 7 pushes the boundaries of reality by driving cars via one building to the next, The Fast and the Furious provides the unbelievable through street car races with seemingly a few hundred people. That word, "possible", will be used sparingly through the course of this film and the entire series. So much so that when I was younger I believed it was possible. They drive their cars (successfully) underneath semi-trucks several times throughout the film. But let's talk about how ridiculous, stupid, and fun this movie is. It's not the best acting, writing, or directing, but you care enough about the characters to where you believe the motivations behind characters' actions regarding family. For all its faults, no one can deny how well this film does the family angle. That's for sure.Ī lot has changed over the years in the series, but the one constant has always been that the films are about family. But you know what, it was a darn good guilty pleasure movie. It was once a cheesy Point Break rip-off that took itself way too seriously. But it’s hard not to grin at the go-for-broke spirit - best illustrated by a final chase sequence, involving every police car in Brazil and a city-trashing bank vault, that nearly out-Bad-Boys-2s Bad Boys 2- which makes this fifth instalment the most entertaining in the series. And at over two hours, it’s far too long. It is not, by any normal criteria, a great film. Instead, prepare for a fiesta of excess, with bikini chicks, hip-hop bangers, meat-headed brawls in warehouses and lines such as, “Nice legs. Don’t expect precision-built scheming: the plot is tosh. It requires the talents of all the old franchise ‘favourites’, from Tokyo street racer Han (Sung Kang) to mechanic Tej (Ludacris), though the film’s only street race is hastily skipped over.
Their plan is to jack a corrupt businessman for $100 million - a sum that, in a film this overblown, seems positively unambitious. In what may or may not be a reappropriation of the script for The Brazilian Job, the aborted Italian Job sequel, the set-up has Diesel’s Toretto in Rio de Janeiro, assembling a crew for the inevitable one last job. Think of it as a WWE reboot of Heat - with Vin Diesel as De Niro. There is literally nothing believable about the character, least of all his Blade Runner tech, yet from the moment he juggernauts on-screen, barking, “Rule number 2: Stay the fuck out of my way!” at a shrimpy South American cop, this quinquel goes from entertainingly stupid to joyously lunk-headed. His body is hard as marble, his mind as sharp as Marple’s. Clad in a flak jacket and a cage-fighter’s beard, he’s the manhunter “the FBI call when they want to catch someone” (which, presumably, is quite often).
The best thing, by far, in Fast Five (aka Fast & Furious 5, aka Rio Heist, aka Who Cares As Long As Things Go Fast), Dwayne Johnson hulks through the movie leaving testosterone trails in his wake.
